Newsletter November 2018
Lynn, Day Care Manager
Welcome to this month’s newsletter!
Children in need: We had a lovely day celebrating Children in Need on Friday 16th November and the children enjoyed wearing their pyjamas; thank you for your kind donations. Please keep adding any exciting milestones to your child’s tapestry as we love to see what they are up to when they are not at nursery.
December dates for your diary:
The children are making decorations and will be decorating a Christmas tree for the Falmouth Christmas Tree Festival. Grand light switch on is on Sunday 2nd December, 5.30pm at Princess Pavilions; with a free carol concert, so pop along and see your children’s hard work.
Preschool and Explorers will be taking part in their very own Nativity and Christmas carol service. This will be held at the Donkey Sanctuary in Mabe on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th of December at 10am. Tickets are 1 pound each and all proceeds will go to the Flicka foundation who do a fantastic job. Tea, coffee and cake will be served in the café after the service, with all profits also going to Flicka. Tickets are available to purchase in the office.
We are closing for Christmas on Friday 21st December at 6pm. We will reopen on Tuesday 2nd January at 7.30am. Funding term ends on the 21st December. We will have a very special visitor coming in to see the children on this day as well!
Please can we ask that children do not bring toys in from home (unless they are comforters), as children are losing them and some get very upset sharing them. Please can you remember to put names in your children’s shoes and clothes, as some have the same items which can get very confusing.
Sennen / Gemma, Under Twos Managers
This month in Under 2’s/Inspiration room our theme is ‘Handa’s Surprise’; so we have been reading the book to the children. We have really enjoyed focusing on different fruits; we have explored them in different ways such as tasting, feeling and smelling them.
We have also been looking at different cultures, we listened to some traditional songs and made some diyas for Diwali; we are continuing to look at Africa and we are going to enjoy making banana bread and African necklaces with the children. (this covers understanding the world in the EYFS). We celebrated rememberance day by decorating some poppy pictures and made some lovely firework pictures with the children, which covers expressive arts and design in our EYFS, as well as British Values. Charlene has settled in really well with our children and has formed strong bonds with them already.
Claire, Littles Manager and Deputy Manager
Welcome to the Littles room newsletter, we have a busy few weeks coming up with Bonfire night, Diwali and Remembrance day, your children will take part in creative activities linked to these events (Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World), we will also be talking about them during circle time , this links to your child’s development in communication and language in the EYFS.
Our theme for the rest of November is Space and we will be making our own telescopes, astronauts and decorating our own spaceships, now that the nights are drawing in we will be going outside in the dark to look at the stars (Understanding The World).
The older children are enjoying spending some time outside with the Explorers getting to know the staff and other children before they transition into the Explorers room. (Personal, Social and Emotional Development).
We take the children outside everyday even if it is raining so please send the children into nursery with wellies and a waterproof coat, these can be left here if you wish or can be sent home each day.
As many of you may have noticed Andrea has joined the Littles team and Charlene has moved over to the under 2’s room, we will miss Charlene and hope she enjoys her new room. Andrea has come across from the Under 2’s room, so has already built relationships with some of the children and is starting to build relationships with the rest of the children. Some children’s Key person has changed so if you are unsure of your child’s key person then please do ask one of us.
Sasha, Early Years Teacher – Pre-School
Welcome back to the start of the second half of the Autumn term, this term we will be focusing on celebrations around the world, from Bonfire night to Remembrance Day, to Thanksgiving, Diwali, St Andrews Day and Christmas (which is fast approaching!). As we are guided by the children’s interests and experiences, this may vary slightly, or may lead onto different topics along the way. For example, looking at Diwali (the festival of light) may lead to experimenting with light and dark, which could develop on to exploring space.
We are starting this half term by looking at Diwali, incorporating our British Values, enabling the children to develop their knowledge on a range of celebrations and compare the similarities and differences between cultural celebrations and the celebrations they themselves have experienced. This aims to build upon their knowledge of the world and in particular their understanding of respecting and valuing all people and communities.
This will then lead on to bonfire night, building upon the importance of health and self-care relating to firework safety. We will be exploring lots of colours, textures and creating lots of firework themed pictures using a range of media and materials. We will briefly explore the story of Guy Fawkes and share a range of poems which use firework sounds e.g. zoom, pop, bang. The children may also have a go at creating their own poems in groups too!
We have lots of exciting things to look forward to this term and I’m sure the children will help to come up with lots of ideas, suggestions and questions to explore as well. As always please feel free to come in and have a look at all the things we are getting up to and add anything you like on to Tapestry too. We have loved looking at all the lovely things some of the children have been up to outside of the setting over the last term.
As the weather is getting rather wet and cold, could you please bring in a coat and welly boots for your child / children, as we spend quite a lot of time outside – in all weather conditions! Many thanks.
Parents evening – We will be having parents evening for Explorers and Pre-School on the 4th and 6th December, please put your name down on the appropriate list on the room door to book a slot.
We are still collecting weekly for the local food bank, so if you can bring anything in for this we would really appreciate it. Box is on the trolley in the hallway.
