Ethos and Core Values

All that we do is linked back to the child – our ethos is to give all children in Cornwall the best start in life.

Our Ethos

Fit N Fun Kids Ethos is to give children in our care the best start in life.

Because children learn most effectively when they’re having fun, we focus on learning through purposeful play – child led but guiding, prompting, using open questions and encouraging them throughout the day.

Each child can explore the world around them at their own pace, with their key person identifying each stage of their development and supporting them through every fascinating and exciting adventure.

We will capture a child’s cultural capital on entry, (the essential knowledge that children need to prepare them for their future success) and we will ensure we use our curriculum to enhance experience and opportunities available to our children.

As children arrive with different experiences in their learning and play, what we do through our Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and interactions with our practitioners can make all the difference for children. It is our responsibility to help children experience the awe and wonder of the world in which they live, incorporating their interests, through the seven areas of learning.

Like ourselves as parents and practitioners, when we started out in life, we didn’t know what our skills, talents and passions were. It is through a broad range of opportunities and experiences that children start to get a sense of what they enjoy, what they are good at and what they need to get better at because it is heavily valued by the society in which we live, for example, reading and writing. It is about helping our children become ready for life.

Our early initiative of care pre-birth onwards is achieved by taking our childcare support in to the community through our sister company, as well as at our core setting. We have wonderful opportunities to support young babies from birth which is a time for so many new experiences for your little ones and a time for us to really bond with your child, care and support them at the beginning of their life journey. Supporting your child to feel safe and secure is of paramount importance to us, whilst stimulating and promoting optimal brain development. This, extended further with support of their physical development as they learn to move, together with providing activities that allow the babies to explore through senses is an exciting time for both your babies, yourself and us!

As your ‘little’ ones become more independent our childcare areas are designed to support such independence both inside and outside with free flow provision, allowing choice of environment in which to learn and grow, enhanced further through extending our learning through forestry and beach school.

Regardless of where your child is on entry level, we are committed to ensuring high quality care and education to support every child in reaching their full potential. We ensure this by our children’s curriculum being designed by our Early Years Teachers, supported by highly skilled and experienced Practitioners and critically evaluated by our management team and of course yourselves as parents as your child’s key educator.

We also challenge / trust the children to guide their own learning – supporting, expanding and facilitating their curiosities and interests.

The journey your child will have within our pre-school is designed to accommodate the fastest of the development phases. We will support your child to become school ready and gain the essential skills they require for their next stage within
Reception of your chosen primary school.

Strong links with our local schools support such transitions and our work here is to ensure that all our children are educated in the key areas of their development, from their independence to age related learning goals, with a focus on becoming school ready, developing those skills needed for the next step of their journey.

Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships. Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers. Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates (DfE 2017)

At the graduation of your child’s journey with Fit N Fun Kids we would aim for them to be confident, resilient, independent and happy young people!

Our Core Values

1. To provide high quality, inclusive and affordable childcare

This we feel is achieved by:

  • Ensuring there are no barriers to using our services such as affordability and access, meeting the needs of each individual child, supporting our families, listening to the needs of our parents, creating and supporting strong partnerships and more.

  • Providing high quality resources and play experiences in a selection of positive environments both within the centre and at beach, forest or cultural/community areas. Furthermore, creating ‘outreach’ services to ensure we reach targeted and vulnerable groups.

  • Ensuring our staff are trained to the highest of standards and supported through regular training events, best practice sharing and continuous professional development, review and support.

  • Ensuring our team have a high ratio of highly qualified staff with Level 3 as the minimum, with those in apprenticeships working towards a Level 3 minimum qualification. This includes our curriculum designed by our Early Years Teacher and supported by our Day Care Manager to ensure we support children to develop and become school ready.

  • Ensuring the welfare of our staff is at the heart of their day to day practice and personal development.

  • Providing flexible care packages to meet the needs of every child throughout Cornwall through session times and outreach work.

  • Always aiming to provide staffing ratios and qualification above the minimum standards set by Ofsted.

  • Through thorough consultation with our parents from settling in to on-going daily discussions, FAMLY, information sharing, parent evenings, monthly newsletters, presentations, events and parent surveys.

  • Valuing our parents’ opinions to ensure we really are meeting their needs, both for their children and themselves. By sharing our experiences and our knowledge of best practice, we believe this consultative and reflective approach ensures that we keep our customer promise of providing a service that meets the needs of our families… our door really is always open and we are always ready to listen.

2. To provide safe nurturing and stimulating environments

Young children develop faster when being cared for in a safe nurturing environment. We aim to achieve this by:

  • Ensuring our rooms have a homely feel, with the opportunity for free flow play throughout the setting in a variety of care rooms offering inspiring play and learning and also by making use of our external areas of the setting and further afield within our local environment such as beach and forest schools.

  • Encouraging children to take safe risks so that they can learn through experiential learning, however, the emphasis of ‘safe’ ensures your children grow confidently and reduces the fear of the unknown. This improves behaviour and increases confidence and self-esteem.

  • Offering children from three months to five years of age a unique childcare provision. Our work has, at its core, the aim of enabling children to develop their emotional, social, cognitive, interpersonal and physical skills, and their desire to explore, discover and be creative.

  • Ensuring there is continuity between home and nursery.

  • To provide a safe environment by regular review of our policies, procedures and risk assessment. Ensuring all our staff are paediatric first aid trained and retrained every three years with our own internal ‘refresher’ delivered to whole team by professional body and ensuring all staff undertake regular child protection training and all those in leadership undertake Multi Agency Level 3 training at least every two years but take part in internal update training.

3. To work in partnership with parents, external groups and agencies to achieve the best outcomes for children.

This we feel is achieved by:

  • Identifying each child’s cultural capital, enabling children to gain the essential knowledge needed to prepare them for their future success. It is about giving children the best possible start to their early education. We develop our curriculum to enhance the experience and opportunities available to children, particularly the most disadvantaged.

We welcome the diverse range of experiences in learning and play held by each child and build upon these unique characteristics, providing a range of opportunities to extend knowledge and skills.

Working in partnership with parents and external professionals where needed, to meet each and every child’s needs.

What we do through the EYFS curriculum and interactions with our teachers and practitioners, potentially makes all the difference for our children. It is our responsibility to help children experience the awe and wonder of the world in which they live, through the seven areas of learning.

  • Working within multi-agency partnerships.

  • Sharing best practice with dual-settings.

  • Working with local schools to facilitate smooth transitions from nursery to school.

  • Developing and delivering a Peer Mentoring Programme with others so as to share best practice and remain sustainable.
