Newsletter February 2018
Lynn, Day Care Manager
Welcome to February’s Newsletter.
First of all can I take the opportunity of congratulating our team for being runners up last month at the Cornwall Excellence in Business Training Awards! Everyone has a fantastic evening and we were thrilled to be recognised for our commitment to developing of our staff!
This month we are commencing our garden makeover which will include part natural for planting and part AstroTurf for all year round use! This has meant that sadly we have had to re-home our chickens as it was always our ethos to have them ‘free-range’ and the new make-over would make this difficult. We are however pleased to say they are now happily free ranging in Rachel’s neighbours garden in the countryside. I’m sure we will be up to visit them once they have settled into their new home alongside a visit to Rachel’s other chickens and of course the piglets that are arriving in March!
Also on our planning for this month, due to Preschool expanding, we have decided to relocate Pre-School into the Littles, Explorers and Inspiration rooms, so they have the use of all three rooms to spread out which will enhance their learning environment. Littles will be moving into the Pre-School room and we are excited to see the benefits this move will bring.
I would like to remind parents about the 5 miles per hour speed limit driving in and out of the nursery carpark keeping the children’s safety in mind. I have also mentioned this to our neighbouring companies.
For safeguarding purposes could you please ring or email the nursery if your child is unwell or will not be in on that day as it is an Ofsted requirement that we record the children’s absence and reason.
We would like to wish Amy a speedy recovery after her recent stay in hospital. We are looking forward to her returning to work in time for the half term holiday club!
Please pop into the office if you would like a chat or have a query about your child care and education needs.
Andrea, Under Twos Manager
This month we will be focussing on the colour red, doing red crafts, red bricks, red cars etc. (EYFS exploring media and materials and the world). We will also be doing Valentine’s day crafts and heart themed activities.
We will be looking at the Chinese new year, which is the year of the monkey, by making monkey and dragon crafts with the children. We will also be making lanterns and tasting some Chinese food (EYFS, Exploring Media and materials and people and communities).
Claire, Littles Manager and Deputy Manager
This month in the Littles room we are focusing on colours and shapes which links to maths and expressive arts and design. The children will be making playdough and exploring coloured gloop as well as coloured water and ice. This links to understanding the world around us. We will also go on a colour hunt inside and outside of the Nursery.
The children will make Valentines cards and biscuits to link in with our british values, as well as learning about Chinese new year. Please ensure children have waterproof coats and wellies as we play outside every day.
Sasha, Early Years Teacher – Pre-School
Hello, pre-school have had a great time exploring nursery rhymes throughout January, it is great to follow their interests, ideas and misconceptions to see them thriving and learning about the world around them. We have also had some new members to our pre-school team, Megan and Kealie have settled in well and have enjoyed getting to know and work with all of the children, and the children have enjoyed getting to know them both too!
February half term leads us on to look at Valentine’s Day, we will be looking at the special people we have around us, making some heart shaped biscuits, looking at different shapes and taking part in lots of arts and crafts, ensuring we continue to cover all the areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The second part of the spring term will see us move on to our topic of ‘growing’, this will cover a range of factors, from what we need to grow, develop and look after ourselves, linking to health and self-care and the importance of healthy eating etc. We will also be planting lots of seed and really focus on what plants need to grow and continue to monitor and observe the growth of plants throughout the term. This may lead us to do some observational drawings of their plants, incorporating the Expressive Arts and Design element, measure the sizes of different plants and counting the number of leaves / petals linking to Maths, and keeping plant diaries to encourage mark making and awareness of change over time. As most of our creepy crawlies slept throughout January we will also go back to exploring garden wildlife, as this is still a keen interest amongst most of the children.
Please keep adding to Tapestry, we love to see what the children have been up to out of the setting. As always please feel free to pop in if you have any questions or just fancy having a look at what we have been up to!
Amy, Out of School & Holiday Club Manager
This month we will be focussing on kindness, with the children creating a kindness tree. They will aslo create their own kindness hands to take home; plus we will do a variety of other arts and crafts activities.
The February half term itinerary is out for holiday club, so please ask for a copy or take a look at it on our website. We have lots of exciting things planned with the children, including a trip to Paradise Park.
